Straw Insulation Panels Can Cut Heating Bills by 90 Percent

Sustainable home builder BaleHause has been successfully using a prefabricated straw insulation system, Jetson Green reports.

The system is made out of timber frame panels packed with deep straw bale, which is topped by a wood fiber breather board. The panels can easily be clad with brick, wood, or slate.

The panel’s manufacturer, ModCell, says that the insulation system can reduce the heating bill of an average household by 90 percent. The number comes from measuring the performance of a housing project in Leeds, England, that uses these panels.
