Curbed Los Angeles investigates the story behind what it called the “surreal photo” of a mansion in a lush parcel of land surrounded by desert that The New York Times used for its California drought feature.
According to Curbed, the photo, taken by Damon Winter, was taken in Rancho Mirage, a wealthy city in the Coachella Valley. Residents of the region use 282 gallons of water per day on average, compared to Beverly Hills, which used 162 gallons per person per day.
The owner of the home “appears to be owned by no one you’ve ever heard of and no one flashy,” Curbed reports.
