Using data from Forbes and real estate investing firm Marcus & Millichap, Lifehacker ranks the best and worst big cities for renters.

The worst cities were the most expensive, where share of household income spent on rent, year-over-year change in rents, and average rent during the last quarter of 2014 were higher, while the vacancy rate was lower. San Francisco topped the list, followed by Oakland and San Jose, Calif.
