Transplants from the coasts are flocking to Austin, where homes replete with luxurious amenities are relatively affordable, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Families are moving into spacious neighborhoods such as Cuernavaca, while empty-nesters are downsizing for luxury condos downtown.
Many of the older homes in the housing stock also provide opportunity for residents that want a fixer-upper, like Los Angeles transplants Dario and Natasha Antonioni. “We wanted to find a project house that we could turn into our dream house,” Mr. Antonioni told The Wall Street Journal.
The traditional two-story home was purchased for $585,000, and the family spent an additional $225,000 to transform it into what they call a modern barn. Mr. Antonioni said that before the home’s transformation, “It was the ugliest house on the block.”
