Unemployment Rates Fall in Over Half of U.S. Metros

A new report from the U.S. Conference of Mayors says that just over half of U.S. metropolitan areas have surpassed pre-recession employment, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Cities doing especially well are mid-tier cities with universities and broad-based economies, such as Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah.

Still, 130 metros will enter 2017 with fewer jobs than a decade ago. Most of these cities areas are Midwestern communities that are recovering slowly because of a loss of heavy manufacturing jobs, an aging population, and deteriorating infrastructure.
