The U.S. Has No Housing for Families Living Below Poverty Line

Rents have been increasing since 2000, and so has the number of households that desperately need affordable housing. Unfortunately, a new report found that zero counties in the U.S. have enough housing for families in extreme poverty.

The report, researched and released by the Urban Institute, found that not only is there a very short supply of housing for extremely low-income families, it is also declining.

“In 2013, just 28 of every 100 extremely low-income families could afford their rental homes,” CityLab reports. “That figure is down from 37 of 100 in 200 – a 25 percent decline over a little more than a decade.”
