The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is a 720,000-acre network of islands and canals that serve as the hub of California’s water system, the New York Times reported. In places like California, where water is a commodity, the delta has also become one of the biggest battlegrounds as the state faces a severe drought and the first-ever mandate to cut back on water use.
Giant pumps pull water flowing to the delta and send it to farms, towns, and cities in the Central Valley and Southern California where it’s needed the most. However, farmers in the north delta are fighting those in the south delta over where the water should be directed, in a state that’s arid, dry, and in desperate need of water.
