Boston Gets Creative in Adaptive Reuse for Housing
Boston is in a bit of a crunch, needing to build 53,000 housing units by 2030 to handle the city’s population growth. The Boston Globe reports that turning lighthouses, warehouses, and even churches into homes is a good way to meet that number.
One family lives in a 4,300-square-foot former fire station, changing the two large engine bays into a family room and a workshop. One developer has converted four plastics factories into living spaces.
Maybe most ambitiously, plans are underway to build an eight-story glass-and-steel addition onto the Holy Trinity German Catholic Church in the city’s South End.
