The Homes That Make Up Rental Housing Stock

Renting is often associated with apartment living. But based on data from the Census Bureau’s 2013 American Housing Survey, the majority of homes for rent are single-family detached.

To be exact, 29 percent of all rental housing stock in 2013 were single-family detached homes. The next most common type, at 19 percent, are multifamily buildings with two to four units.

Multifamily rental units, to no surprise, are more prevalent in urban and suburban areas, which the NAHB says is “largely due to the high land costs.”
