In a two part series, The New York Times technology columnist Nick Bilton writes about the pitfalls of his DIY smart-home upgrade.
“Some jobs, I learned, require a professional,” he writes. After doing some research, he decided to contact professionals from Z-Wave and Control4 to install smart-home upgrades. Z-Wave is a consortium of companies that had adopted a shared language to let their products communicate with each other, which includes LG, Bosch, D-Link, and ADT, while Control4 is an entire operating system for a home with its own products.
“For geeks who like to tinker and don’t want to be tied down to a single manufacturer, Z-Wave is a dream,” Bilton writes, adding that the system offers a choice of 1,400 devices.
