For 7.5 Million Americans, the Mortgage Crisis Isn’t Over

Many American households still owe more than their homes are worth. According to CityLab, some counties even see the number of these underwater households climbing.

A new report by the Center for American Progress says that the number of underwater homes is stagnant or increasing in some 1,000 counties. In total, underwater homeowners make up 15 percent of all homeowners, half of what it was in 2011, but still much higher than the rates of the late 1990s.
