Stephanie Brick, a designer at Sustainable Design Group and a contributor to The Washington Post, estimates that 95 percent of homeowners use the kitchen to cook, work, and socialize.
Brick has tips to balance kitchen design, working the happy medium between boxed-in rooms and wide-open spaces. She writes that an open doorway with a high header is enough of a separation between the kitchen and family room, and that mail drop-off stations and two-tier sink islands can help homeowners better organize the room.
