Residents of the Brownsville neighborhood in Brooklyn asked for streetlights, a community garden, and a Burger King. All they had to do was text.
CityLab reports that one feature of the Brownsville Plan, a new planning project that will add 2,500 affordable homes to the neighborhood, is that residents were able to send text messages that suggest ideas to improve their community. The messages were collected and mapped, showing which areas needed the most attention.
“It’s a great idea to have an option of gathering information via text—it makes it accessible, especially for those who might not be able to attend community events because they’re homebound or working overtime,” says Giovania Tiarachristine, neighborhood planner at HPD.
