Los Angeles County Approves Granny Flats For The Homeless

Los Angeles found a creative strategy to address its rising homeless population, which has reached 60,000.

CityLab reports that L.A. County has approved a pilot program called The Granny Flats Motion, where homeowners are given $75,000 to build a backyard accessory dwelling unit that can be rented by a homeless family or individual. Details of the program are still being worked out, with hopes that it could be implemented by the end of next year.

The pilot, for which the county has earmarked $550,000, will grant two or three of such units in areas where zoning is managed by the county as officials assess whether to scale up in the future.
