The Working Class Can’t Afford To Live In Most Major Cities

Blue-collar workers in San Antonio can get a taste of the good life without taking on debt. That’s not the case everywhere.

After factoring in living costs including housing, food and transportation, HowMuch.net found that only 12 of the nation’s 50 largest cities are affordable for the typical working class family.

Low-wage workers are better off living in smaller cities, such as Newark, N.J., where the typical working class household can save upwards of $10,000 a year after paying for living expenses. Fort Worth, Texas, and three Arizona cities (Glendale, Gilbert, and Mesa) were also found to be relatively inexpensive.

New York City, San Francisco, and Boston are among the most expensive cities. No cities on the West Coast were determined to be affordable for working-class residents.
