The Best And Worst Cities To Raise A Family

Overland Park, Kan., offers excellent schools, good wages, and reasonably priced housing.

Realtor.com named the Kansas City suburb the nation’s most family-friendly city. The site ranked the 10 best and 10 worst cities to raise a family based on factors including cost of living, housing affordability, unemployment, and poverty rates. Playgrounds, attractions, and childcare costs were also included into the calculations.

Madison, Wis., Plano, Texas, Seattle, and Fremont, Calif., round out the top five. Birmingham, Ala., was rated the worst, in part due to its high infant mortality rate and poverty rate.

Detroit might have come in second to last, but the outlook isn't completely terrible. The city has the third most playgrounds per capita of the cities on the list.
