10 States Where Homeownership is Projected to Become Unattainable by 2030

Home price growth is outpacing wage growth across the U.S., and this is causing homeownership to slip further out of reach in some states

Home prices are rising, and in many states, they are rising at a much faster rate than annual wages. This growth is causing homeownership to slip further out of reach in some states. To figure out the states where Americans will face the greatest barrier to homeownership in the next five years, online moving assistance marketplace Hire-A-Helper analyzed Redfin’s data center to calculate projected median home prices in each state by 2030.

They found that Montana will face the biggest hurdle to homeownership by 2030. In Montana, household incomes will need annual wages to increase by up to 144% for residents to afford a home in 2030. This is followed by California and New York, which will need to see median wages increase by 140% and 103%, respectively.

While many states are seeing large predicted increases in home prices, and therefore the household income needed to keep up, not all states are seeing the same pressure.

This is the case in North Dakota, Louisiana, and Iowa, where household income doesn’t need to increase at all for residents to be able to afford the median house price of $342,912, $296,160, and $327,422, respectively.
