While micro apartments have generated some buzz recently, some developers are going the other way and building spacious, and expensive, macro units. Houston has the most of them.
RCLCO created an interactive map that shows where all 16,260 macro units are scattered across the country. Houston has 1,443 macro units, topping New York City (1,307) and Dallas-Fort Worth (1,057). Macro unit production is on the rise in cities such as Milwaukee, Albany, N.Y., Birmingham, Ala.
The size needed to be counted as a macro unit depends on the number of bedrooms. In Houston, for instance, the average macro unit is 1,674 square feet.
