Houston was the top homebuilding market in 2015, building nearly 30,000 homes last year. A rocky 2016 has cost it the top spot, now conceded to to its Texas rival.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Dallas now leads the nation in housing starts. For the 12 months ending at midyear, Dallas-Fort Worth builders started 29,626 homes, a 5,664 home increase over 2015. Houston is second, with 26,039 starts at midyear. The drop is due to a decline in oil and gas industry employment.
Two more texas metros, Austin (13,423 starts) and San Antonio (9,978 starts), made the top 15.
