A periwinkle bathroom can add $2,786 to a home's listing price, but a yellow exterior could take away $3,408, says new Zillow analysis of how home colors impact selling price.
Home sellers with a yellow exterior and a red kitchen could be in for a major price cut, as red kitchens were estimated to take away the next most value, $2,310. But what colors are enticing buyers to buy, rather than walk away? Black front doors. CBS News reports that black front doors can add an estimated $6,271 to the selling price, drawing the highest premium of all colors in Zillow's analysis, from a charcoal to rich jet black tints.
Color can influence buyers to open their wallets -- or to pay less, if it's a hue that's less than pleasing, the analysis found. The color to the entrance to a house can make a big difference, said Zillow. "For a seller, painting a front door is one the least expensive home prep projects, but also one that can have a powerful impact on a home's sale price," said Kerrie Kelly, Zillow home design expert. "We're seeing a notable shift in home design where pops of color – particularly in darker hues of blue and gray to even black -- are becoming increasingly popular."
