In an interview by ProudGreenHome.com with KB Home’s Jacob Atalla, the company’s vice president of sustainability initiatives talked about high performance home building, net zero energy home concepts, and what the market for these houses looks like.
One of the largest home builders in the nation, KB has been addressing water shortage issues head-on. KB makes its homes EnergyStar certified, saving 30,000 gallons of water per year. In addition, the builders have won a WaterSense Partner of the Year award for three straight years.
In 2014, KB launched a demonstration home called the Double ZeroHouse 3.0 in El Dorado Hills, Calif, with a dual emphasis on both water and energy efficiency. KB estimates that the home can conserve as much as 70% of the freshwater used by a typical resale home.
