Metro Areas With The Most New Residential Homes

June 30, 2017

When it comes to new home construction, the nation’s most booming metro area is the The Villages, a master-planned, age-restricted community in central Florida.

LawnStarter compiled a list of the top-25 metro areas with the most single unit building permits per 1,000 people. The Villages led the list with 44.34 units per 1,000 people, followed by Myrtle Beach, S.C. (39.19), St. George, Utah (32.53), Bend, Ore. (26.37), and Daphne, Ala. (25.04).

Other markets in the top 25 include Raleigh, N.C. (11th), Austin, Texas (15th), Nashville (16th), and Houston (24th).

Single family home construction has slowed for the first time in 2016 since 2008, but growth over the past three years remains strong.

Building permits are issued by local building departments prior to construction and are a useful proxy of construction activity. Houston led the nation in new single family homes with more than 110,000 permits over the 2014-16 period. The DFW (almost 84,000) and Atlanta (just over 60,000) were second and third – but of course, larger metros should have larger absolute totals.
