The Most Popular States And Cities For Millennial Movers

August 30, 2017

Though the mobility rate for young adults is at a 50-year low point, plenty of Millennials are still packing up and heading out, chasing their hopes and dreams. Or, they’re just looking for an affordable place to live.

Based on net migration rates compiled by the Census Bureau for 2015, SmartAsset found the most popular destinations for Millennial movers.

The five most popular states were Texas, Washington, Colorado, North Carolina, and Virginia, all of which had net migration of 18,000 or more. Texas, Colorado, and North Carolina have some of the nation’s fastest-growing economies, and Washington and Virginia each have major cities that Millennials are particularly attracted to

Seattle and Norfolk, Va., both cracked the top five most common cities for Millennials, along with top-ranked Charlotte, Oakland, and Fargo, N.D. Charlotte was the only city with a net migration of more than 10,000 people, though Seattle was close behind at 9,886.

New York City, San Diego, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas, and Chicago were the six cities to lose the most Millennials in 2015. Also, though the Midwest is usually championed for its budget-friendly housing, young adults evidently are not interested in the region.

The Midwest has no representatives in our top 10 states where millennials are moving and only two representatives – Fargo, North Dakota and St. Paul, Minnesota – in the top 10 cities where millennials are moving. Are millennials leaving the Midwest? Ohio and Michigan, for example, both rank in the bottom 10.
