Data indicate that construction industry workers are particularly susceptible to mental health issues and suicide, with the Centers for Disease Control listing construction as one of the jobs with the highest rate of death by suicide and substance abuse.
While the most common mental health problems are anxiety and depression, disorders such as substance misuse can also be considered a mental health issue. And when a construction worker is struggling to manage mental health issues, it can compromise both their own safety on the jobsite and the safety of those around them.
As a part of its ongoing initiative regarding members’ mental health and well-being, NAHB recently created a new video “toolbox talk” on mental health. The video covers critical topics such as:
- Identifying the warning signs of mental distress
- Mental health risk factors
- Strategies for managing mental health
