The construction industry continues to see slow job growth, but the end of the year saw some improvement. According to a recent analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the National Association of Home Builders, construction job openings increased in November to 292,000, compared with 202,000 the month prior and 272,000 in November 2024.

As job openings improved, the rate of layoffs declined

While construction job openings increased in November to 3.4%, the layoff rate in construction declined to 1.7%. The rate of quits, however, increased to 1.5% in November.

How do job openings in the construction industry compare to the nationwide job market?

Despite improvement in the construction sector, the nationwide job market reported a decline in new job openings in November. The number of open jobs for the overall job market declined from 7.49 million in October to 7.15 million in November. Additionally, in November 2024, there were 8.031 million job openings nationwide.
