Despite a rise in openings in the overall U.S. job market, construction job openings remained flat year-over-year in January, according to an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from the National Association of Home Builders. In January, there were 231,000 open jobs in the construction sector, down just slightly from the 232,000 recorded during the same month last year. However, compared with December 2025, job openings were down from 245,000.

How does the construction sector compare with the larger U.S. job market?

The number of job openings in the overall economy increased in January, rising from 5.83 million in December to 6.2 million in January. The January reading, however, declined from a year ago when there were 6.55 million openings.

Layoffs and quits in the construction industry also declined

While openings in the construction sector remained mostly flat, layoffs and quits both declined in January. The layoff rate in construction declined to 1% in January, and the rate of quits fell to 1.7%.
