Residential Solar Market Slowing; Industry Looks to Expand Into New Regions

Market growth for rooftop solar panels has slowed to 5% this year after growing 8% in 2018, according to the energy research firm Wood Mackenzie. Residential solar companies installed 603 megawatts of power during the first quarter of 2019, 8% less than the previous quarter, according to Wood Mackenzie.

Solar installers may have hit a saturation point in states in which rooftop solar is already popular such as California and in the Northeast. The solar industry is looking to other states where installation has lagged. New policies in Maryland, South Carolina, and Illinois may prime the market for an uptick in installations in those states.
