Real Estate Developers Are Converting Golden Era Skyscrapers Into Residential Areas

One Wall Street, the Crown Building, the Beaux Arts Emigrant Building, and several other of New York City's architectural landmarks are being converted into expensive penthouses and residential spaces. Harry Macklowe of Alchemy Properties has an affinity for such properties due to his personal history with them, Realtor.com explains. 

More and more developers are repurposing these historical buildings as an attempt to work around the lack of vacant land in attractive locations like Manhattan, and the financial ups and downs of the current commercial and residential markets. 

Of particular interest are the nation’s first skyscrapers. Built from 1900 to 1930, a time when developers were fiercely competing to build taller and taller buildings, it was the Golden Era of skyscraper construction: the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building and the Woolworth Building all became permanent markers on the Manhattan skyline.
