People have to make a ton of money to afford a home in the Bay Area. For many, that’s not an issue.
With a median household income of $96,667 in 2016, San Francisco was named the nation’s highest-earning top-25 U.S. metropolitan area by Realtor.com. After several years in the first spot, Washington D.C. was bumped to No. 2, with a median household income of $95,843.
Salaries and wages have surged in the metro San Francisco, which includes Oakland and Berkeley, since 2011, when the median household income was around $70,000.
The Boston, Seattle, and Baltimore metros ranked third through fifth on the list, all with median household incomes above $75,000 as of last year.
The San Jose, Calif., metro area–home to Silicon Valley–remained in the No. 1 spot last year when looking more broadly at all metropolitan areas.
