Single women in Houston, Texas are more likely to be homeowners than are single men, according to a new homeownership gender gap study from online loan marketplace Lending Tree.
The gap between the two genders is 7.80 percent, according to the study based on Census data. Houston is 36th-ranked on the study's list of 50 cities, and single women in H-Town own about 267,337 homes, while single men own 157,255 homes. Elsewhere in Texas, the homeownership gender gap in San Antonio (ranked 18th) is 9.63 percent, where single women own approximately 112,279 households and single men own and occupy 62,906 households; in Dallas, ranked 27th, the gap is 8.24 percent, and in Austin, the gap is 6.51 percent, with single women outpacing single men in both cities, The Houston Chronicle reports.
Beyond Texas, Lending Tree found that in all of the 50 largest metropolitan areas, single women own more homes than single men. This trend is somewhat surprising, given the average woman in the U.S. makes only 80 percent of what the average man does. On average, single women in America own around 22 percent of homes and single men own less than 13 percent.
