Talk about quality control. Curbed reports that Tesla’s first two solar roofs have been installed on houses owned by company co-founder Elon Musk and CTO JB Straubel.
The site estimates that the roof on Musk’s house would cost $30,000, plus a $7,000 Tesla Powerwall battery. That particular roof is expected to generate $44,600 worth of energy over the next 30 years.
Tesla’s solar tiles are meant to be more aesthetically pleasing than the typical photovoltaic panel, but they’re also more efficient. Instead of a one-size-fits-all panel, the solar-collection can be customized, with the site and pitch of the roof determining the number of active, energy-generating tiles and inactive tiles.
