Ten builders are responsible for 30.4% of new-home closings in 2019, making it the second consecutive year the share tops 30%. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 683,000 new single-family homes sold in 2019 and 207,724 of those came from the top 10 home builders. This share drops down to 23% when custom, not for-sale, homes are added to the equation. The National Association of Home Builders found that beginning in 1989, the top 10 builder share began to grow rapidly, going from 8.7% in 1989 to 28.2% by 2006.

From 2017 to 2018, the top 10 share jumped significantly, rising 4.2 percentage points to 31.5%. This jump was mostly due to the acquisition of CalAtlantic by Lennar Corporation. The top 10 share edged down slightly to 30.4% in 2019.

The 2019 top 10 builder ranking remained unchanged in 2019 from the previous year, with builders occupying the same rank positions. D.R. Horton was the top builder in 2019, capturing 8.6% of the market with 58,434 closings. D.R. Horton has been the top builder since 2002. Lennar ranked second on the list with 7.5% in market share and PulteGroup in third, with 3.4%.
