When it comes to affordable rent, its usually slim pickings for the average, freshly minted college graduate. Trulia takes a look at which metro areas are within reach of the new grad’s wallet.
On top of the list for most affordable rental markets for recent grads is St. Louis, Mo., where the maximum monthly rent payment for an affordable unit is $666, and recent grads need only 0.3 of a roommate to make median rental affordable.
Still, even though the Gateway to the West ranks well in affordability, only 18.6 percent of units are affordable to recent college grads. Go further west, and young grads will find it harder to afford the cost of living.
The three least affordable rental markets for recent grads are on the West Coast: Portland, Ore., Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif., and Orange County, Calif., where only a paltry 0.1 to 0.2 percent of units are affordable for new grads.
