Are Backyard Homes San Francisco’s Solution to Supply Shortage?

There’s a divide between San Francisco homeowners, builders, and policy makers, the San Francisco Examiner reports.

One side wants to make it easier to build second homes in a backyard, while the other is stalling such attempts.

Proponents of building second homes on the same lot argue that it can be a simple solution to San Francisco’s housing crisis, where there is little undeveloped land, nowhere to expand, and a thriving job market that attracts newcomers.

But there are zoning issues, safety issues, and aesthetic issues that need to be solved before a new home can be built in a backyard.
