Wichita Has The Most Affordable Homes For Teachers

First-year teachers in Wichita, Kan., only need to spend 10 percent of their income to afford half the rent of a two-bedroom apartment.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the city ranked first in a recent study of affordable housing for teachers conducted by Apartment List.

Fifth-year teachers in Wichita must spend 14 percent of their income to rent a one-bedroom apartment, the study said. And a 10th-year teacher would spend about 16 percent of their income to rent a two-bedroom apartment.

Teachers spend more than the recommended 30 percent of their income toward rent in a third of the 50 major U.S. cities. San Francisco was found to be the least affordable. Rent prices are more reasonable in the South, Southwest, and Midwest, according to the study.
