Homebuyers Are Saving More Than $25K On New Homes

Recent research shows buyers could save an average of $25,335 over the first ten years of homeownership if they choose a new home over an existing one

Homebuyers are saving big by opting for new-construction homes. A new report from real estate marketing platform Realtor.com shows that newly built homes save buyers an average of $25,335 over the first 10 years of ownership compared with homes in the resale market.

Homeownership is not a one-time expense, and the ongoing costs of owning a home are where new construction really shines. Buyers who focus only on the listing price are missing a significant part of the financial picture.

In some states, the typical savings from new construction are even higher

New England leads the way in new-construction savings, with Massachusetts topping the list at a savings of $38,927 over ten years. According to the report, higher savings in the Northeast is likely due to stricter building codes and harsher winters amplifying the efficiency advantages of new homes compared with existing ones. New Hampshire follows Massachusetts with a savings of $35,885 over 10 years, and then Maine with a savings of $34,76.

Meanwhile, the South sees the least savings

While the South leads the way in new-home construction activity and typically offers lower listing prices for new homes, the long-term savings tend to be lower. In Arkansas, for instance, the savings are just $15,247 over 10 years. In South Carolina, they reach $16,163, and in Kentucky, savings reach $16,392.
