Homebuyers Are Ignoring These Red Flags to Buy a House
Affordability remains a challenge for homebuyers across the housing market, causing many to make concessions in order to become a homeowner. According to a survey from Clever Real Estate, 76% of house hunters say they would settle for a home even if it doesn’t meet their full criteria. Additionally, 48% of buyers say they would lower their standards if home prices continue to rise, and 55% say they’d give up their non-negotiables for a home in their budget.
Buyers are overlooking red flags for the right price
Of those surveyed, 38% of buyers say they’ll disregard a red flag for a significantly lower asking price, and 42% say they believe their standards are higher than what they can realistically afford. While the median home price in the U.S. sits at $405,300, 63% of buyers say they can’t afford a home priced higher than $400,000.
What compromises are buyers willing to make?
Homebuyers are willing to overlook a number of red flags in order to afford a home, including structural damage, problematic locations, and more.
For instance, 57% of buyers say they would purchase a home even if it had plumbing, drainage, or water pressure issues. The same share of people also said they would purchase a home even if it had a history of pests. Only 12% of buyers say they would walk away if an inspection revealed a major flaw.
When it comes to location, 50% of buyers say that a home located in a high-crime area is not a deal breaker. Another 63% say they would buy in an area at high-risk of natural disasters.
However, not all homebuyers think they’ll need to compromise
Although compromise is often necessary, 53% of buyers expect to buy a home with no major flaws. Additionally, 77% of buyers say they’ll wait as long as it takes to buy a home that meets all of their criteria, but 52% worry that waiting for the perfect home means they’ll never buy.
