Home Builders See Uptick in Merger and Acquisition Activity

As the housing industry continues to face a challenging business environment, the share of acquisitions and mergers among home building firms has grown

Faced with a difficult business environment, the home building industry is seeing an uptick in consolidation activity. In 2026 alone, Taylor Morrison was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway; Tri Pointe Homes was acquired by Sumitomo Forestry; and United Homes Group by Stanley Martin Home, according to a blog post from the National Association of Home Builders.

Mergers and acquisitions have increased

The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index tracked mergers and acquisitions data from August 2025 to June 2026. The survey shows that mergers and acquisitions have increased from 14% to 21% during that time. However, more than 40% of builders report no changes in consolidation trends in the markets where they operate.

The share of builders who have been approached for an acquisition or merger has grown even further

While 21% of mergers and acquisitions have taken place in 2026, the share of builders who have been approached for a merger or acquisition has more than doubled from 9% in August 2025 to 18% in June 2026. As a result, the portion of builders who have not been approached at all dropped from 87% to 78% during this period.

Still, most builders plan to expand without an acquisition

When asked about future plans for growth, 61% of surveyed builders plan to expand organically in their existing markets. Only 6% say they plan to expand by acquisition, and 5% say they plan to be acquired by another company. For additional details, please consult the full survey report.
