Home Listings Grow in August
New listings are rising across the U.S., and while competition heats up among sellers, buyers have plenty of options to sort through. According to a recent report from real estate marketing platform Redfin, new listings rose by 0.4% from a week earlier during the four weeks ending Aug. 23 to their highest level since April. Additionally, the total number of homes for sale rose by 0.5% week-over-week, reaching their highest level since May.
While listings are up, pending-home sales are down
Despite new listings rising, pending-home sales fell by 1.1% from a week earlier to the lowest level in six months. The report suggests buyers are likely holding off because of high home prices. The median U.S. home-sale price rose by 1.9% year over year to over $400,000, and the weekly average mortgage rate sits at 6.65%.
Which metros are seeing the highest increase in home listings?
Some metros may be seeing more seller competition than others. Virginia Beach, Va., especially, has seen listings grow by 14.3% year-over-year, followed by San Jose, Calif., at 13.3%, Boston at 9%, and then St. Louis and Seattle, both at 8.9%.
