10 Cities With the Most Homeowners Under 30
For many, homeownership is key to achieving the American dream, but high costs have created a barrier to entry for young people. Still, some cities are increasingly attracting younger generations. Across the 50 largest U.S. cities, 3.1% of Americans under 30 hold a mortgage. GOBankingRates analyzed data across these metros to identify which of these cities is home to the highest percentage of homeowners under 30 years old.
Among the 50 largest U.S. cities, Indianapolis has the highest share of mortgage-holders under 30, at 10.2%. This was followed by Salt Lake City, and Cincinnati, where the share of homeowners under 30 is at 9.4% and 8.9%, respectively.
Homeownership is still considered a pillar in the American Dream, despite the fact that, over the past 100 years, it has become drastically more complex and costly. Buying a home can be a challenging financial feat even for established Millennials. For younger generations, such as Gen Z, who are still early in their earning years and often buried in student loan debt, homeownership may still be out of reach.
