Houses Are Being Snatched Off the Market in These 12 Metros
The overall U.S. housing market is at a relative standstill, with listings stagnated in many major metros. According to the August 2025 Housing Market Trends Report from housing marketing platform Realtor.com, the typical home in the U.S. sits on the market for 60 days before selling, an increase of a full week compared to the same time last year.
However, some markets—particularly those in the Midwest—are seeing homes sell much faster. Of the 12 metros with the lowest median days on the market, six were located in the Midwest, three in the Northeast, and three in the South.
Milwaukee leads the way due to its greater affordability
In Milwaukee, for-sale home sat on the market for just 32 days on average, about half as long as the national average. More buyers are gravitating toward Milwaukee because of its relative affordability. In August, the median listing price in Milwaukee increased by just 0.2% from one year ago to $399,900. Comparatively, the national median home price across new and existing homes was $429,990 that month.
What other housing markets are seeing homes sell more quickly?
In addition to Milwaukee, the other top cities include Buffalo, N.Y.; Chicago; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Cincinnati. In each of these cities, the typical home sits on the market for 37 days before selling. In Detroit; Hartford, Conn.; and Providence, R.I., homes sit on the market for 38 days, and homes in Louisville; Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; and Minneapolis are selling within 39 days.
Where are homes sitting on the market for the longest?
- Homes Take the Longest to Sell in These Markets: In larger Southern metros, including Miami and Austin, Texas, homes are taking much longer to sell.
- These Are the Best Markets for Buyers and Sellers Right Now: While homes are selling quickly in the Northeast and Midwest, cities in the Sun Belt are seeing homes sit on the market for longer.
