States Seeing the Most Inbound and Outbound Movers

Cross-country moves have dwindled since the pandemic housing boom, but job opportunities, home prices, and lifestyle changes are still swaying where Americans choose to settle down
Dec. 4, 2025

While some homeowners remain locked in to their current mortgage rates, others are moving in search of better deals. A recent analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by long distance moving company Atlas Van Lines shows the states that saw the most inbound and outbound movers throughout 2025. Arkansas, Idaho, North Carolina, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C.—which is listed as a state for the purpose of this analysis—saw the most inbound movers. Meanwhile, the U.S. states with the highest percentage of outbound moves in 2025 were Louisiana, West Virginia, Wyoming, Delaware, and Nebraska.

Notably, three of the five outbound states from 2024 have moved to a balanced position: California, Illinois, and New York. This reflects the widespread “lock-in effect,” in which many homeowners are choosing not to move at all.
