The condition and structure of a roof can help assess storm-related damages on a residential building, writes Thomas Mierzwa, a civil-structural engineer. Effects of strong winds can easily be seen along the roof perimeter, as well as on vents, shutters, and coverings. The use of hurricane clips or straps on buildings with common roof lumber indicates that the structure was constructed to help resist strong winds and storms.
