A team of researchers at Stanford University has developed inexpensive design modifications that they say could replace the need for residential earthquake insurance. The team has developed seismic isolators that allow a house to move without collapsing as the ground shakes. The engineers have tested an earthquake-resistant house that stayed upright as it shook at three times the intensity of the destructive 1989 Loma Prieta temblor 25 years ago.
