WHAT’S TRENDING IN EUROPEAN KITCHEN DESIGN IN 2021?

Europe continues to be the bellwether of kitchen design trends, and staying up to date on what’s going on across the pond provides a glimpse into the future of kitchen design in North America. European design trends are becoming more prevalent in American homes, particularly in kitchens and living spaces where homeowners are testing out new colors and materials for a refreshed aesthetic and increased functionality.


IRIS CERAMICA GROUP RELEASES 13 NEW ITALIAN SURFACES

April 8, 2021

Italian tile manufacturer Iris Ceramica Group recently debuted new Terrazzo-style porcelain surfaces and a selection of large format marble panels under its Fiandre brand and new onyx lookalikes under its Ariostea brand. In total, 13 new surfaces fit for both residential and commercial applications were released under the II Veneziano, Maximum Marmi, and Marmi Classici lines. The collection falls into the “quintessential terrazzo trend” with inspiration from 15th-century Venetian palaces.


PROJECT OF THE WEEK: AN AMSTERDAM DUPLEX CREATED WITH BIOPHILIC LIVING IN MIND

Designed and developed by Amsterdam, Netherlands-based studio GG-loop, the Freebooter is a two-family duplex apartment building that balances environmental construction with the wellbeing of its inhabitants. Freebooter is a small building consisting of two duplexes measuring 1,292 square feet each. Located in the center of the island of Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam and facing the Ij river, the building is sensitive to Dutch history, customs and culture. 


PROJECT OF THE WEEK: SCANDINAVIAN-INSPIRED HOME USES CEDAR, CEMENT TO BLEND INTO LANDSCAPE

Clean Scandinavian details reflect the Danish roots of homeowner and designer Mette Axboe with a strong connection to the surrounding environment in this Park City, Utah home. Axboe designed the interiors to embody the idea of hygge, which means comfort, contentment, and wellness in Danish culture. Each design choice was informed by Scandinavian design principles and Axboe’s global background.


ITALIAN MANUFACTURER INTRODUCES NEW FIREPLACE THAT SANITIZES INTERIORS

Italian electric heating manufacturer OLMAR has introduced two new electric fireplaces that provide heat and sanitize interiors. Released as part of Milan Design Week 2021, the two electric fireplaces include Line and Square. The products—which the company says “stand out for their geometric shapes, versatility and formal rigor”—were designed by Giulio Cappellini, who became the brand’s artistic director this year.


UK-BASED RECLAIMED WOOD FLOORING COMPANY ENTERS US MARKET

Woodworks by Ted Todd, a United Kingdom-based flooring manufacturer, entered the U.S. market this year, and its reclaimed antique wood offerings tie themes of sustainability and authenticity together. The company, established in 1993, reclaims wood floors and old timbers from factories and cotton mills in the UK. Woodworks by Ted Todd’s entrance into the U.S. market comes at a time when more homeowners and residential pros seek products with bespoke, authentic, and artisanal features, flooring included.


PARISIAN BRAND NOW OFFERING 15 VIVID COLORS FOR APPLIANCES

L’Atelier Paris, a French appliance and metal cabinetry manufacturer, recently expanded its color options with the addition of 15 limited edition bright hues, continuing a trend to bring more color and personal touches to kitchen design in the U.S.

The company says its latest collection aims to infuse the kitchen with positivity, joy, and inspiration. It’s based on the fashion-forward life of Parisians and a cultural saying, joie de vivre, which means exuberant enjoyment of life.
