As a result of rising costs, home builders are taking steps to value engineer their product. Architect and homeowner surveys conducted by John Burns Real Estate Consulting's DesignLens database and New Home Trends Institute show that streamlining the home's exterior is one of the most common cost-reduction strategies builders are using today, and it's also one of the most readily accepted trade-offs for consumers.

- Minimalism
- Mixing materials and strategic placement
- Window standardization
- Designing for the street scene
