September new-home sales may disappoint

Numbers contradict recent reports of optimism among builders

Based on a monthly survey of home builders done by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the volume of home-sales contracts made in September was down 3 percent from August, and down 11 percent year-over-year.

The Wall Street Journal reports that this year has been a disappointment so far for home builders, as sales contracts in the first eight months of this year were only around 2 percent greater in number than in the same period last year, indicating slow growth in the industry.
