A look at what new homes are up against in the U.S. existing home inventory

Zillow looks at the age of U.S. housing stock by decade and finds that the vast majority of homes currently in existence were constructed in 1950 or later.

Overall, the decade that makes up the largest share of the existing housing stock is 2000-2009. Zillow also analyzed the distribution of homes by decade. For example, Washington, D.C. is a good place for homebuyers looking for the “jazz-age fixer-upper” from the 1920s, while the western states of Nevada and Arizona offer abundant contemporary design and 21st century amenities.
