Realtor.com cites a recent editorial in the New York Times: “As a means to building wealth, there is no practical substitute for homeownership.”

Components of homeownership that lead to wealth building include forced savings in the form of monthly payments of principal, appreciation of price over time, multiple tax benefits, and protection for the owners from rising costs.
