Zillow Real Estate Research claims that “the renting poor are now increasingly visible in historically relatively affluent suburban communities.”
Data shows that though roughly one-third of all American households rent, a large share of these renters, around 68 percent, are low-income households.
Differing from a generation ago, low-income renters can be found in low-rise, low-density multifamily structures in the peripheries of many suburbs, instead of rural, single-family residences and large, urban, multifamily developments.
