Renters: The New Residents of the Suburban Periphery

Zillow Real Estate Research claims that “the renting poor are now increasingly visible in historically relatively affluent suburban communities.”

Data shows that though roughly one-third of all American households rent, a large share of these renters, around 68 percent, are low-income households.

Differing from a generation ago, low-income renters can be found in low-rise, low-density multifamily structures in the peripheries of many suburbs, instead of rural, single-family residences and large, urban, multifamily developments.
